A thick fog bank that settled over the northern motorway corridor overnight caused a 14-vehicle pileup near Gävle early this morning, injuring nine people.
Emergency services closed a 30-kilometre stretch of the E4 for five hours while crews cleared wreckage and treated casualties. None of the injuries are life-threatening.
Meteorologist Per Eklund explained that a temperature inversion trapped moisture near the ground: "Drivers went from clear conditions to near-zero visibility in seconds."
